Formed in 1956 in Bergen County, New Jersey, USA, the Royal Teens are remembered primarily for the 1958 rock 'n' roll novelty number "Short Shorts". Originally a quartet called the Royal Tones, the line-up included pianist Bob Gaudio (17 December 1942, Bronx, New York, USA), saxophonist Bill Crandall, bassist Billy Dalton and drummer Tom Austin. Influenced by black music, they worked as back-up band to traveling R&B artists. Gaudio and Austin had written an instrumental dance song as a warm-up for their stage show.
