Formed in Oldenzaal, Netherlands, in 1996, Soulburn emerged from the first breakup of Dutch death metal titans Asphyx when founding members Eric Daniels (guitar) and Bob Bagchus (drums) sought a dark, blasphemous outlet inspired by Bathory, Venom, and Celtic Frost. Partnering with bassist/vocalist Wannes Gubbels (Pentacle), the trio unleashed their cult blackened death/doom debut, Feeding on Angels (1998), before temporarily folding back into Asphyx.
