The Rainbows were a group started in high school in Washington, D.C. They were a hot group in local talent shows and parties. Members of the group were Jessie Belvin, Billy Stewart and Marvin Gaye. There song Mary Lee was the first fast tempo of the "Doo Wop" rhythm and blues. This was a time when there were several groups blossoming in D.C.: The Clovers, Faith, Hope and Charity, Ray, Goodman and Brown (originally Mark [Greene] and the Moments then the Moments), The Starlighters (later Anacostia, both led by Van McCoy) etc.
