“karatahta” ilk olarak “the redundants” adıyla 2002 yılında yeditepe üniversitesi ingilizce hazırlık okulu’nda öğretim elemanı olan hakan şentürk, tim porter*(#13) ve murat ercan (virus, blue blues band) tarafından kuruldu. tim porter kendi grubu #13 dağıldıktan sonra, kendi bestelerini “karatahta” ile tekrar yorumladı ve hala grup için şarkı yazmakta. 2003 yılında yine yeditepe üniversitesi’nde öğretim elemanı olan emrah virlan gruba katılmıştır ve tüm vokalleri üstlenmektedir.
