THE SAVAGE ROSE – ROSKILDE 2026 Soon-to-be 78-year-old Annisette Koppel led The Savage Rose to one of the greatest triumphs of this year’s Roskilde Festival with a magnificent and deeply moving concert. Around us, more than a few people were moved to tears. The band was founded back in 1967 by Annisette and brothers Thomas Koppel and Anders Koppel. Annisette and Thomas later married, but Thomas passed away far too young in 2006. Together they had a daughter, Naja Rosa Koppel, who now sings backing vocals with the band. Seeing mother and daughter perform together gives the music an extra emotional dimension. The band naturally revolves around Annisette, but this concert also showed what an outstanding ensemble The Savage Rose is. The musicians were given the spotlight in a stunning instrumental performance of “The Triumph of Death”, music originally written for the ballet. It was a powerful reminder of the band’s extraordinary musical range. The Savage Rose has earned legendary status in Danish music history through its unique sound, where piano and organ intertwine seamlessly beneath Annisette’s unmistakable voice. Even at nearly 78, she sings with astonishing power and emotion. She can still howl like a wolf and deliver songs in a way that is entirely her own. The band has always been ambitious, uncompromising and deeply political. Annisette spoke movingly about visiting the occupied Palestinian West Bank in 1981 while heavily pregnant with Naja. The song that followed was one of the emotional highlights of the evening. The concert ended with Nordahl Grieg’s “Kringsatt av fiender” (“Surrounded by Enemies”)—a timeless anthem against fascism and war, and in favour of peace and human solidarity. The entire Arena joined in singing. It was one of those rare concerts that remind you what music can do at its very best: bring people together, offer hope, and give voice to our shared humanity. We left deeply moved. The Savage Rose Jul 04, 2026
